Turf Toe
Description
Turf toe, or first toe sprain, is an injury of the bottom side of the large toe joint caused by flexing or extending the toe too far. It is typically an injury found in football and soccer players from quick stops and turning motions. Depending on the severity of the sprain, there could be ligament damage or fracture.
Symptoms
Typically with Turf Toe there is swelling and pain under the large joint of the first toe especially while walking and bending the first toe. You may also find bruising and stiffness in and around the toe joint.
Pedorthic Management
- Placing a firm plate extension or shank made of plastic, steel. or carbon fiber under the shoe insert to reduce large toe motion
- A custom foot orthotic with full forefoot extension can also help reduce motion of first toe joint
- A Plate can also be inserted into the sole of the shoe
- A rocker sole on the shoe can help to reduce the amount of motion necessary from the large toe while walking
Other Treatments/ Modalities
- Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation of the toe joint can help to reduce inflammation and swelling.
- Severe cases may require casting or a removable brace to control motion of the large toe to promote healing
- Taping of the large toe along with the extension can also speed healing
- Premature return to activity can aggravate the condition
